Mail Clients

If you use a mail client on your computer (such as Outlook or Thunderbird), you'll have another step in the set up process.

If your mail client is from from 2017 or later:

You'll only be asked for your password upon initial set up.

If your version of your mail client is from 2016 or before, you'll need to set up an app-specific password:


PLEASE upgrade your mail client to a newer version.

Email clients that do not launch a browser window requiring you to log in through Google’s interface are called “less secure apps”. Google will stop supporting less secure apps soon, but until you can upgrade to a newer more secure email client there is a process you can take today. This process uses what are called “app specific passwords” so that you can enable 2SV on your Google account but still use less secure email clients.
